La Cala de Mijas is a very friendly family small Town with the added advantage of a long sandy beach, it has an openair market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, little market along the seafront during the summer months. La Cala de Mijas is well known for it's choice of Restaurants, you can pick from the wonderful Chiringuitos (typical spanish beach restaurants which specialise in fresh fish cooked outdoors over an olive wood fire. Tapa bars, Spanish, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, English, Irish, Danish and many more. You have everything you need within the Town, even a 9 hole Golf Course (La Noria). If you would like to venture further, there are plenty of interesting places you can go to on a Day Trip, visit the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Seville which is a really nice old Spanish City, Cordoba famous for it's Mesquita, Gibraltar, Jerez (where all the sherry such as Tio Pepe is made), and you can even cross the Straits of Gibraltar and visit Morocco for the day.
